Big Springs Chamber of Commerce
| The Big Springs Chamber of Commerce is an active, voluntary organization of our business community. Our Chamber prides itself on recognizing various enterprises, main street businesses and home-based ventures. It also works closely with the local school, by encouraging students to get involved in community projects. |
Cooperation among voluntary organizations is what motivates the people of the Big Springs Chamber of Commerce. It is by working together that goals have been met. Recent accomplishments include the successful organization of a local housing authority and development of additional housing in our community. Members have also organized a weekly Business and Industry group to meet and brainstorm for new ideas and set new goals. Projects include creating a plot registry for the local cemetery and renovating the original spring site (for which the town was named) and its historical sign . The Chamber will continue to utilize local input, interests and energy to turn ideas into reality for the citizens of the community.

The Big Springs Improvement Group (BIG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to
improving the quality of living for all ages in the Big Springs area. The group
holds numerous fund raisers to help pay for the projects in which they participate each
year. Some of these projects include: swimming pool improvements, maintaining the community petunia patch, replacing the windows in the Depot Museum and up-keep of the museum. BIG is also a sponsor of "clean-up days" during the year, the community Easter Egg Hunt, Family Fun Night during the summer, and Santa's visit to the school. The group's special day of celebration is the annual Springs Festival Day in May when they host a barbeque in the park. BIG will help any organization needing time or funding.

The new Big Springs baseball/softball field was completed in 1995 and had its
first season of use in 1996. The communities of Big Springs and Brule combined
players to form the South Platte Baseball and Softball teams. Many volunteers
from both towns work endless hours getting the field in top shape. The field
has a sodded grass infield and is watered by an underground drip system. The
field is used by four different local teams from May to August. A total of
44 youngsters from ages 7 to 13 utilized the ball diamond in 1996. Local teams
host other surrounding teams during the summer months on this field. This facility
provides many hours of worthwhile enjoyment for youth, parents and other loyal
boosters. It is a great asset to our community.
Blood collection by the Red Cross was begun in 1941 as a volunteer program
to provide blood for American and British troops in World War II. The public
response was enthusiastic, and after the war, the Red Cross continued to collect
blood for civilian use. Today nearly 6 million volunteer donations are made
to the Red Cross each year, making it the nation's largest supplier. The Red
Cross sponsors a blood drive in Big Springs twice a year. A mobile unit is brought
in and local volunteers help with school arrangements, assisting the team during
the procedure, and record keeping. Local churches and clubs furnish lunch for
the workers and donors. For more information, contact Janie Jimenez at 308-287-2539.
