Q125 Celebration Update
Please join us May 22-23-24 for the 125th Birthday Celebration (Quasquicentennial) for the Village of Big Springs. We are planning a three-day celebration to mark this momentous event, to be held in conjunction with the Big Springs Alumni Banquet. As former or current Big Springs area residents, we hope you will be able to take part in some or all of the activities being planned.
There will be tables and chairs under a large tent on the corner of Chestnut and 3rd Streets. We would like to encourage your groups to use this area for your get-togethers prior to the dances on Friday and Saturday nights. The tent is quite large and will accommodate several groups at one time. It will also be available all day Sunday for those who would like to gather there. Bring your lawn chairs and settle in for a weekend of great fun!
As you can see this will be a very busy weekend. In the past we have had trouble with low attendance at the alumni dance. Many groups have chosen to go somewhere quiet to visit after the banquet. In an effort to draw more people to the dance-entertainment we will place seating areas off to the sides under the tent so you can visit but still be a part of the festivities. Friday night we have booked the Jim Rice Band from the Lewellen/Oshkosh area. Jim has spent several years in Nashville and will provide a very entertaining evening of dance music. Saturday will feature a young lady from Ogallala “Lexi Moul”. This will kick off her summer concert performance prior to moving to Nashville to start her recording career. We hope you will all gather to visit with your former classmates and enjoy the great music provided by these incredibly talented local young people. As there will be a beer garden in the tent both - No carry in alcohol will be allowed! Bosselman’s Inc. is sponsoring the beer gardens for us and are donating a percentage of their profits to the Big Springs and Brule Fire Departments, so we hope you will help by supporting them.
Return of the early response cards has been great. If you have not returned yours and plan on attending, please do so as your earliest convenience. These will only be used to help us in our food planning and are not confirmations. You still need to send in your Banquet Reservation forms as in the past.

VETERAN'S MEMORIAL PROJECT OFF THE GROUND
The Big Springs Veteran’s Memorial planning committee is finalizing the design on the Veteran’s Memorial being placed on the lot at 2nd and Maple Streets. The curb and gutter have been installed thanks to volunteers: Adam Hayward, Dwight Abbott and Kendall Foster who helped concrete specialist, Ray Howell. The next step will involve hauling of fill dirt and leveling of the property. Once the site is prepared, the walkway and circular pad will be poured. Ray Howell is donating his time and expertise for this part of the project. A drawing of the design is shown below and includes a walkway to the circular memorial site, three granite ledger stones to be engraved with the names of all local veterans, centered with a 30’ American Flag pole, surrounded by six 25’ flag poles with smaller flags for the various branches of the Armed Forces, benches, fencing, lighting and landscaping.
Just over $42,000 has already been received for the project. A minimum donation of $100 is suggested, but donations of any amount are welcomed. The tax deductible donations should be made payable to: The Nebraska Community Foundation and mailed or left at Farmers State Bank, PO Box 436, Big Springs NE 69122. Since an attempt will be made to include the names of all Big Springs veterans, we are asking everyone’s help with the search. The names of known veterans of any branch of the armed forces should be sent in with donations.
We are making an attempt to get the name of every veteran who has lived in the immediate Big Springs area onto the memorial, we will gladly include veterans from outside the area as long as the minimum donation is made. All corrections or additions to the list should be sent IMMEDIATELY to Farmers State Bank at the above address.
Funding for the project will come from donations, grant funds and local fund raisers. For more information about the project please contact: Ron Hendrickson (308) 889-3681; David Deyloff (308) 889-3372; or Susan McGreer (308) 289-5534.BIG SPRINGS POND RESTORATION PROJECT
The Big Springs Community Foundation is also working in conjunction with the Village of Big Springs on a project to clean up the pond area directly below the old water-tower hill, making the area more assessable for fishing and picnics. Panhandle Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. voted to take on the project and will be assisting with all aspects of project development including the grant writing process. The initial grant information has been submitted to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality in hopes of securing funds through the Environmental Trust.
Tax-deductible donations are being accepted for this project and may be sent to The Nebraska Community Foundation, P.O. Box 294, Big Springs, NE 69122. For more information, please contact David Spencer or Susan McGreer at 308-889-3622.
